Team member in the spotlight: Susan Manns

  • In this series we’re spotlighting a different MWM team member each month, so you can get to know the team a little better.

Say hello to SMSF Manager, Susan Manns.

“MWM values people. The focus is on building relationships rather than just processing numbers. The team is very experienced and continually seeks to improve the service delivered to clients. I am delighted to contribute in this environment.”

Tell us a bit about your role

As the Head of SMSF at MWM, I oversee the superannuation division ensuring excellent service delivery to our clients. Our aim is to see clients fund the life they want into retirement.

To assist in bringing this to fruition our team provides timely and accurate advice on all taxation, compliance and management issues affecting our clients and their self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs).

In the current climate there is a lot of uncertainty and fear and an avalanche of information as we navigate through changes introduced due to COVID-19. Our team is in constant contact with clients to provide the right advice on the relevant measures available to them throughout this challenging time.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

The world of superannuation and self-managed funds is constantly changing. One of my greatest challenges is ensuring I understand legislative changes and developments as they occur.

At present it feels as though every day another measure is announced in response to COVID-19 and it is quite complicated to sift through the information in order to find the most vital details affecting the superannuation sector. Now more than ever the ability to effectively communicate this correct information is critical.

    What inspires you?

Overcomers. We are all dealt a different hand and each have varying challenges to overcome in our lives. I am inspired by people all around me who face hardship and walk away the victor.

What tv show are you watching at the moment and why do you like it?

I was recently roped into watching the Netflix docuseries, Cheer. My understanding of what cheerleading was could not have been further from the mark.

I was both shocked and impressed by the athletes’ strength, agility and trust in each other. Every member in the cheer squad – from the head coach down to the first-year members who knew they wouldn’t make mat (I didn’t know what that meant until I watched this show) – worked tirelessly and were so committed to the end goal.

The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is …..

    Take ownership of your mistakes.

That said, I also want to reference the previous question by saying,  the head coach in the Cheer docuseries, Monica Aldama said something that I loved and haven’t forgotten: “you keep going until you get it right, and then you keep going until you can’t get it wrong”.

I don’t believe perfection is possible but limiting your chance of error is very achievable if you are willing to work hard.

What do you enjoy the most about working at MWM?

The people, the culture and the positivity. It all contributes to an environment where you enjoy your day and collaboration is encouraged.
