In this series we’re spotlighting a different MWM team member each month, so you can get to know the team a little better. Say hello to Client Manager, Todd Smith.
“I greatly enjoy the culture at MWM. This coupled with the vision and values that the directors and firm possess make MWM a great place to work and do business with.”
Tell us a bit about your role…
As Manager of one of the accounting teams here at MWM advisory, I oversee a portfolio of clients, ensuring excellent service delivery. In addition to that, I assist other teams with complex taxation matters to ensure that the firm’s clients are able to maximise their outcomes.
Why did you become an accountant?
I fell into it really. I was doing a double degree in Law and Accounting at university, and decided that I needed to get a job, so I wrote to and interviewed with five of the larger accounting and five of the larger legal firms on the Gold Coast. So, I fortunately had a few options available to me and ended up starting with an accounting firm as an undergraduate accountant.
If you could travel to one place in the world, where would it be and why?
I would pick France, specifically the Alps and Pyrenees. I have grown up riding and racing bicycles and watching the Tour De France closely over the last 25 odd years. So, I want to tick off of a few of the big Alpine climbs that I have seen the racers endure and overcome each year.
What do you enjoy the most about working at MWM?
Working the with team we have here in the MWM office creates a fun environment and the work itself is always challenging. As a firm we have a very diverse client base, so we are engaged with a wide range of technical issues, and strategies that can be put in place to achieve the right outcomes for clients. To me it is always fascinating to be part of that process and the solution.
The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is…
It’s pretty simple. Find something you’re passionate about and make a career from that.
What book are you reading at the moment and why do you like it?
I have just finished a bunch of technical books on taxation law as part of my Master of Taxation, which I have I recently completed. Aside from that I am eagerly awaiting the release of “The Winds of Winter” from George RR Martin.
