Team member in the spotlight – Alison Thomas

In this series we’re spotlighting a different MWM team member each month, so you can get to know the team a little better.

Say hello to Accountant, Alison Thomas.

“I was drawn to joining MWM as they have a great reputation on the Gold Coast for providing more of an advisory aspect to their services, than your typical ‘straighty-180’ accounting firms. James and the MWM Advisory team have a non-traditional outlook on accounting services that is very appealing to our clients and business owners.”

Tell us a bit about your role…

In my role as an Accountant in Darren Chan’s team, I am assisting him with full-service client accounting, including tax returns, financial statements, tax planning and client advisory work. The work is both diverse and rewarding for me and I really enjoy the team atmosphere.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

My background is in commercial rather than technical tax administration, so the steepest learning curve at the moment is improving my knowledge on the tax planning side and the intricacies involved in the Australian tax law.  Darren Chan is my manager and my mentor for this as he has great knowledge in this area and is an excellent teacher.

What inspires you outside of the office?

What I enjoy most outside the office is getting out for walks on the beach or through the rainforests of the Gold Coast Hinterland and that kind of thing. I also love reading, spending time with my family and planning holidays with family and friends, as it gives us something fun to look forward to.

What do you enjoy the most about working at MWM?

I really like the team here at MMW, they are a great bunch of people. Everyone has been so warm and welcoming to me and very helpful in every possible way.  I also like the energy James Marshall brings to the team, he is so passionate about the work and our clients and he also keeps it fun!

Why did you become an accountant?

I got into accounting because I just love the numbers and interpreting the stories they tell about our clients and their businesses. We see financial and economic impacts of good tax planning and strategy. Accounting suited me as it was the closest thing you can get to working with numbers all day.

What book or tv show are you reading/watching at the moment and why do you like it?

I just finished the American TV show ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’.  It is hilarious!

My normal go to for reading is a great novel. I find anything by Ken Follett is pretty good.

If you could choose one person as a mentor, who would it be?

I’d choose Bill Gates, as I find him very inspiring. He is so pragmatic and smart and I admire his thirst for knowledge. He also presents his opinions in a very diplomatic and thorough way and I think he is a great philanthropist, giving back through many important causes.  That is inspiring to me!
